The generic name of this medication is hydrochlorothiazide/spironolactone and the brand name is Aldactazide. It is manufactured by Pfizer.

The active ingredients of this medication are spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide. The inactive ingredients are calcium sulfate; corn starch; and added flavor.

It is primarily used in the treatment of edema or swelling in patients suffering from CHF or congestive heart failure; cirrhosis of the liver; renal disorders like nephrotic syndrome; especially when other treatment modalities are found to be ineffective.

Common Uses:

This medication is primarily used in the treatment of edema or swelling in patients suffering from:
CHF or congestive heart failure;
Cirrhosis of the liver;
Renal conditions like nephrotic syndrome; especially when various other forms of treatment are found to be ineffective.

Off Label Uses:

Used in the treatment of people suffering from hypertension or high blood pressure when various other treatment options are found to be ineffective.

Side Effects:
Constipation;
Diarrhea;
Dizziness;
Fatigue;
Headache;
Loss of appetite;
Nausea;
Stomach upset;
Weakness.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people that are:
Allergic to this medicaiton or any of its ingredients;
Allergic to any other sulfonamides like sulfamethoxazole;
Suffering from renal disorders like decreased urine output, decreased kidney function;
Suffering from liver problems;
Suffering from increased levels of blood potassium;
That are taking other potassium-sparing diuretics like triamterene; or potassium supplements; salt substitutes containing potassium; or dofetilide.

It is also not recommended in pregnant women, women planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.

Drug Interactions:
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors like enalapril;
Angiotensin II receptor antagonists like valsartan;
Cyclosporine;
Macrolide immunosuppressives liike tacrolimus;
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like indomethacin;
Cholestyramine or colestipol;
Barbiturates like phenobarbital;
Chemotherapy medications;
Corticosteroids like prednisone;
Diazoxide;
Digoxin;
Dofetilide;
Ketanserin;
Lithium;
Narcotic painkillers like codeine;
Non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents like tubocurarine;
Anti-hypertensive medications;
Diabetes medications like glipizide or insulin.
