The generic name of this medication is spironolactone and Aldactone is the brand name.

The active ingredient of this medication is spironolactone and inactive ingredients are calcium sulfate, corn starch, and flavor.

Aldactone is manufactured by Searle.

It is primarily used in the treatment of edema or swelling and fluid retention in patients suffering from CHF or congestive heart failure; liver cirrhosis; or renal disorders like nephrotic syndrome.

Common Uses:

This medication is used in the treatment of:
Edema; swelling; and/or fluid retention in patients suffering from congestive heart failure; liver cirrhosis; or renal conditions like nephrotic syndrome.

Off Label Uses:

Off-label use includes acne treatment in women.

Side Effects:
Diarrhea;
Drowsiness;
Headache;
Nausea;
Stomach cramping;
Vomiting.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people that are suffering from:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Liver disease including cirrhosis of the liver;
Renal disorders including renal failure;
Fluid or electrolyte problems.

It is also not recommended in women that are are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.

Drug Interactions:
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (corticotropin)(ACTH);
Corticosteroids like prednisone;
Barbiturates like phenobarbital;
Narcotics like morphine;
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors like enalapril;
Angiotensin II receptor antagonists like valsartan;
Cyclosporine;
Macrolide immunosuppressive agents like tacrolimus;
Aldosterone-blocking agents like eplerenone;
Potassium sparing diuretics like amiloride; triamterene; and potassium supplements;
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs like indomethacin;
Norepinephrine;
Digoxin;
Digitoxin;
Lithium;
Nondepolarizing muscle relaxants like tubocurarine or quinidine.
