The generic name of this medication is imiquimod and Aldara is the brand name.

Aldara is manufactured by 3M Pharmaceuticals.

The active ingredient of this medication is imiquimod. Inactive ingredients include: benzyl alcohol; cetyl alcohol; glycerin; isostearic acid; methylparaben; polysorbate 60; propylparaben; purified water; sorbitan monostearate; stearyl alcohol; white petrolatum; xanthan gum.

It is primarily used in the treatment of certain types of skin growth like actinic keratoses or skin cancer like superficial basal cell carcinoma.

Common Uses:

Used in the treatment of certain types of skin growths like actinic keratoses or skin carcinoma like superficial basal cell carcinoma or SBCC.

Off Label Uses:

Off-lable use includes treatment of external genital and perianal warts.

Side Effects:
Back pain;
Changes in skin color;
Diarrhea;
Headache;
Itching, burning, mild pain, or tenderness at the application site;
Redness, dryness, flaking, swelling, or scabbing at the application site;
Small sores or mild drainage at the application site;
Thick or hardened skin at the application site;
Tiredness.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people suffering from:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Various other forms of skin carcinoma;
Skin that is broken; chapped; or inflamed at the site of application.

It is also not recommended in women that are pregnant; planning on becoming pregnant; and nursing mothers.
