Aminocaproic acid is the generic name of this medication and the brand name is Amicar. Aminocaproic acid is the active ingredient of this medication and the inactive ingredients are, water and hydrochloric acid.

It is used in enhancing hemostasis when fibrinolysis leads to severe bleeding. Fibrinolytic bleeding is common in surgical complications post heart surgery; with or without cardiac bypass; and portacaval shunt; hematological anamolies like aplastic anemia; life-threatening conditions like acute abruptio placentae; cirrhosis of the liver; and neoplastic conditions like cancer of the prostate; lung; abdomen; and cervix.

Common Uses:

It is used in enhancing hemostasis when fibrinolysis leads to severe bleeding. Fibrinolytic bleeding is common in surgical complications post heart surgery; with or without cardiac bypass; and portacaval shunt; hematological anamolies like aplastic anemia; life-threatening conditions like acute abruptio placentae; cirrhosis of the liver; and neoplastic conditions like cancer of the prostate; lung; abdomen; and cervix.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Change in amount of urine;
Chest pain;
Diarrhea;
Ejaculation problems;
Fatigue;
Headache;
Irregular or slow pulse;
Loss of hearing;
Mood swings;
Muscle pain;
Nausea;
Pain at the site of injection;
Prolonged menstruation;
Seizures;
Single-sided weakness;
Tinnitus or ringing in the ears;
Vision changes.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in patients with a history of hematuria that is upper urinary tract in origin;
Also, this medication is not to be given without a definite diagnosis and/or laboratory findings that indicate hyperfibrinolysis (hyperplasminemia);
This medication should not be given intravenously because it could lead to hypotension; bradycardia; and/or arrhythmia;
Appropriate care should be taken while inserting the needle and fixing of its position since there are chances of Thrombophlebitis occurring.

Drug Interactions:
Blood thinners like heparin and warfarin;
Blood factors like Factor IX; and prothrombin complex concentrates.
