The generic name of this medication is diphenhydramine and brand names are Aler-Tab, Allergy, Allermax, Altaryl, Benadryl, Children's Allergy, Diphen Cough, Diphenhist, Dytuss, Q-Dryl, Siladryl, Silphen Cough, Simply Sleep, Sleep-ettes, Sominex Maximum Strength Caplet and Theraflu Thin Strips Multi Symptom.

The active ingredient of this medication is diphenhydramine.

This medication is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, itching, watery eyes, hives, rashes, itching and other symptoms of allergies and the common cold.

Common Uses:

This medication is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, itching, watery eyes, hives, rashes, itching and other symptoms of allergies and the common cold.

Off Label Uses:

It is also used to suppress coughs, to treat motion sickness, to induce sleep, and to treat mild forms of Parkinson's disease.

Side Effects:
Sleepiness, fatigue or dizziness.
Headache.
Dry mouth.
Difficulty urinating or an enlarged prostate.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended for patients with the following conditions:
In those that have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days.
In patients with glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye.
If there are stomach ulcers.
In patients with an enlarged prostate, bladder problems or difficulty urinating.
In patients with hypertension or any type of heart problems.
During pregnancy, pre-pregnancy.

Drug Interactions:
Anxiety or sleep medicines such as alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), temazepam (Restoril), or triazolam (Halcion).
Medications for depression such as amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor), fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), or paroxetine (Paxil).
Any other medications induce drowsiness, sleepiness, or relaxation.

28 Sep 2011	I was having a cough which I think was allergy related. Nothing would calm the cough at night except a codeine based cough medicine.
