09 Mar 2012 I got hyper-thyroid when my baby was 4 months old, and it took a few months to get diagnosed, first the Dr said it was post-partum thyroiditus, now they think it's Graves Disease. I was prescribed Carbimazole at 20mg to start with and given regular blood tests. I wasn't really aware of any side effects of the drug when i started taking it, although I was upset to find that it contains Gelatine (I don't eat meat). It relieved the symptoms of being hyper-thyroid and I was grateful. I got into hypo-thyroid territory and the dose was reduced to 5mg, now I'm waiting the results from my latest blood test, but I think I might have gone a little hyper again. Then I started to find that I was feeling pretty unwell differently from the thyroid problems. I started out getting really bad Eczema, and went back to the GP, who gave me creams and stuff, which sorted it out, but didn't mention that it could be a side effect of the Carbimazole. Then I noticed that I was starting to lose my hair, and now that's kind of accelerated and I also have a bad taste in my mouth a lot of the time. I'm struggling to distinguish what is coming from the meds and what is a part of the Graves Disease, but I think that some of this is at least is from the meds because I didn't have it in the period before diagnosis, and it's got worse as I have been on the meds longer. I am going back to my GP again, but I feel really down about it as the more I read, the more I find that I am not being told the whole story about the condition or the treatment options, so thank you all for sharing your experiences as that helps me too.

23 Feb 2012 My most improved symptom was reduction of a tremor in my right arm. I am also a lot less agitated. I have had headaches, itchiness, and loose bowels. My thyroid has been inflamed primarily because I was prescribed thyroxin when it wasn't actually needed. My advice to anyone who is asked to take this drug is to insist on seeing an endocrinologist before treatment whether it be under or over active thyroid because my GP did not understand it properly and has really screwed me up. This could have all beren avoided if I had seen an expert in this field first, as he does think I have a deficiency in my immune system but nothing requiring thyroxin. I am slowly also putting on weight which I find quite depressing, and really just want to be drug free!

05 Dec 2011 Having been diagnosed with OA thyroid and Graves I am now on my second round of Carbimazole, having started at 50mg on both occasions. I tolerate it well I think. Some joint pains and ulcers in my mouth but otherwise ok. For me the benefits outweigh the negatives I have two children who keep me busy so I work through the fatigue which can be overwhelming and a positive mental attitude towards getting well is a must. Whichever treatment works for you. The Internet is a great tool and forums like this invaluable for sharing. I have learned so much reading this today and sojme food for thought re the long term effects of Carbimazole. Has anyone been on maintenance doses for more then 2 years? I get euthroid then it shoots back up from the minimum dose of 5 mg a day.
