Constipation treatment
Description
Constipation can be described as a gastrointesinal disorder characterized by difficulty in the formation of stool; passage of only small amount of extremely hard; dry stool; with a marked decreased in the frequency of passing this hard and dry stool; mostly less than thrice a week. Constipation begins at the level of the large intestine; the function of which is processing and eliminating stool. W
hen food travels through the colon, water absorption takes place as stool is being formed. Contractions of the muscles in the colon get the food to move the stool in the direction of the rectum and when it reaches the rectum the stool is solid since a large amount of water has been absorbed; however if most of the available water has been absorbed or there is very less water available the stool becomes extremely hard and dry and it is not possible for this to pass out easily during bowel movements and this conditions is referred to as constipation.

Causes
Lack of fiber in regular diet; dehydration or decreased intake of water and/or liquids; lack of physical activity and/or exercise; certain drugs or medication can cause constipation, for example analgesics like Codeine; Demerol; and Perocdan; antacids like Maalox and Mylanta; anticholingeric drugs like Donnatal; anticonvulsants like Dilantin; anti-depressants like tricyclics; beta-blockers like In
deral and Tenormin; iron and calcium supplements; certain pain medications; antispasmodics; and also diuretics; conditions like irritable bowel syndrome or IBS could also cause constipation sometimes and diarrhea at times; pregnancy also causes constipation in women; constipation also sets in with age; and traveling across time zones accompanied with changes in eating habits; abusing laxatives because over usage over a prolonged period of time can damage nerve cells in the colon and affect the colon's normal functioning and contractions; holding up stool or neglecting the urge to have a bowel movement also contributes towards causing constipation; various disease conditions that could cause constipation include multiple sclerosis; Parkinson's disease; chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction; paralysis; serious and debilitating injuries to the spinal cord; diabetes; hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism; uremia; amyloidosis; lupus erythematosus; scleroderma; colorectal tumor/cancer; depression; diverticulosis and Hirschsprung's disease.

Diet should be easily digestible.
One should eat freshly cooked food and chew food thoroughly before sw
allowing.

Spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric powder, fennel and asafetida make food easily digestible.
Increase regular physical exercise since it helps maintain regular bowel movements.

Common Symptoms
Opening the bowel infrequently; straining and discomfort associated with passing stool; abdominal bloating; abdominal cramping and pain associated with bowel movements.
Rare Symptoms
Neurological symptoms like vertigo might occur in tandem with constipation in people who are generally not nervously inclined; as a consequence constipation that continues over a period of time especially more than three to four days, could result in cerebral symptoms like an ongoing sense of pressure/weight accompanied with dullness in the head and/or headaches. Dizziness also could result from c
onstipation because of increasing pressure in the lower part of the bowel; and fecal colic.

Traditional Treatment
Conservative treatment includes dietary and lifestyle changes or mild laxatives. Diet changes include meals rich in fiber 20 to 35 grams; drinking 64 ounces of liquid either water or juice on a daily basis; limited consumption of food that has less or no fiber like ice cream; meat; cheese; or any other processed foods. Lifestyle changes include exercising on a regular basis; taking time to have a
bowel movement; and having a bowel movement when urged. Medication includes laxatives which could be the following four varieties which are bulk-forming; stimulant; lubricant and saline. Bulk-forming laxatives include Metamucil; Citrucel; and Serutan which contributes towards increase the volume of stool; making them softer and therefore easy to pass; stimulant laxatives function by stimulating the walls of the intestine to contract and these include Correctol; Ex-Lax; Dulcolax; Purge; Feen-A-Mint; and Senokot; lubricant laxatives which make stool soft and easy to pass and saline laxatives include milk of magnesia; citrate of magnesia and Haley's M-O; increase the concentration of salts within the feces.
Other treatment modalities include: Bowel retraining – this helps return of reflexes that are absent or slow; rectal suppositories like bisacodyl-containing suppositories; enemas like oil-containing enemas help soften stool that have become hard and dry; biofeedback – here a sensor is used to track muscle function which is displayed on a computer screen therefore precise and accurate assessment of various body functions can established and the patient can be trained to use anorectal muscles appropriately; and finally surgical removal of the colon could be an option for patients with chronic form of extreme constipation.
