The generic name is dexamethasone.

It is corticosteroid.

It is a corticosteroid that decreases swelling and inflammation and is used in treating various conditions like skin diseases, allergic problems, breathing problems, cancer, blood disorders, digestive problems, eye disorders and for arthritis/bursitis.

Functions by reducing tissues from reacting to inflammation. It functions by altering the body's reaction to various immune stimulation.

Dexamethasone is the active ingredient of DexPak.

Common Uses:

Used in the treatment of various conditions like skin diseases like psoriasis and hives; allergic conditions; breathing problems; cancer; blood disorders like anemia; digestive problems; eye disorders and for arthritis/bursitis;

It is also used to test an adrenal gland disorder or Cushing's syndrome.

Cancer Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting;
Carditis;
Celiac Disease;
Connective Tissue Disease;
Croup;
Eczema;
Fever due to malignancy;
Giant Cell Arteritis;
Hemangioma;
Hypercalcemia associated with sarcoidosis;
Infantile spasms;
Multiple myeloma;
Myasthenia Gravis;
Nasal polyp;
Pemphigoid;
Pericarditis;
Polyarteritis nodosa;
Polymyalgia rheumatica;
Prevention of cancer chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting;
Prevention of post-operative nausea and vomiting;
Prevention of radiation-induced nausea and vomiting;
Prostatic carcinoma;
Pseudogout;
Reiter's disease;
Relapsing polychondritis;
Respiratory distress syndrome in newborns;
Rheumatic fever;
Vasculitis;

Side Effects:
Black, tarry stools;
Convulsions;
Depression;
Diarrhea;
Difficulty sleeping;
Dizziness;
Extreme sense of well-being;
Fever;
General body discomfort;
Headache;
Increased appetite;
Increased sweating;
Increased pressure in the eye;
Indigestion;
Joint pain;
Menstrual period changes;
Mood swings;
Muscle weakness;
Nervousness;
Personality changes;
Prolonged sore throat, cold, or fever;
Puffing of the face;
Severe allergic reactions including chest tightness; dyspnea or difficulty breathing; hives; itching; rashes; swelling of the facial area like mouth, tongue, and lips.
Severe nausea and/or vomiting;
Swelling of feet or legs;
Weakness;
Weight gain;
Weight loss;
Vomitus resembling coffee grounds.

Cautions / Warnings:

Aminoglutethimide;
Amphotericin B;
Anticholinesterases;
Anticoagulants;
Antidiabetic agents;
Aprepitant;
Cholestyramine;
Cyclosporine;
CYP3A4 substrates like erythromycin and indinavir;
Digoxin;
Epinephrine;
Hepatic enzyme inducers like barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin, and rifampin;
Hepatic enzyme inhibitors like azole antifungal agents, estrogens (including oral contraceptives), macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin);
NSAIDs;
Potassium-depleting agents like amphotericin B, loop and thiazide diuretics;
Salicylates;
Thalidomide.

Drug Interactions:
Corticosteroids could increase or decrease the effect of blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin);
Ephedrine;
Phenobarbital;
Phenytoin (Dilantin);
Rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane);
Not recommended in pregnant women and nursing mothers.
