Arthur Ashe
Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. (1943 –1993), professional tennis player, winner of three Grand Slam titles. Ashe was given a scholarship to UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), and was the first African American to be selected for the United States Davis Cup team in 1963. In 1965, Ashe won the singles title in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and in 1968, Ashe won the United States Amateur Championships and the inaugural US Open. He turned professional is 1969, and continued to play with great successes, including winning another Grand Slam title, as well as several at Wimbledon. Ashe remains the only African American to win the US Open, Wimbledon, and the Australian Open.
Ashe retired in 1980 after heart surgery, but was ranked as one of the 21 best player
s of all time by Jack Kramer, tennis player and promoter. Ashe also became involved in civil rights action after retirement from tennis, and was arrested once in 1985 for protesting outside of the South African embassy for an anti-apartheid rally.
After one heart attack and two heart surgeries, Ashe was found to have contracted HIV from a blood transfusion. He was diagnosed after his hand became paralyzed, and exploratory surgery revealed not only that he was suffering from a toxoplasmosis infection but also from full-blown AIDS, which reduces the ability of the immune system to fight off infection.
When Ashe was diagnosed in 1988 AZT was the only AIDS drug on the market. Because desperate AIDS patients were willing to try anything, the drug had been rushed through approval processes and little was known about it. The doses given were the equivalent of “going after a mosquito with a hammer,” killing unhealthy cells along with healthy ones; AZT is now part of combination therapy. Ashe began by taking 10 capsules a day, and although the dosage was later reduced to three capsules per day, the earlier high dosages may have actually harmed his body.
Arthur Ashe spent the last year of his life calling public attention to AIDS. He founded the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health, and was named Sports Illustrated magazine’s Sportsman of the Year.
But in late 1992, not long before he died in February1993, Ashe got himself arrested again for protesting U.S. immigration policy toward Haitians. "It does wonders for your outlook," he said. "I'm sure it released a torrent of endorphins. Marching in a protest is a liberating experience. It's cathartic. It's one of the great moments you can have in your life."
