Earvin "Magic" Johnson
Earvin “Magic” Johnson (1959—), retired professional NBA basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers. Magic played the position of point guard for the Lakers, winning five championships and receiving the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award in the 1980s. Johnson was a member of the famous American “Dream Team” that won the 1992 Olympic gold medal.
Magic Johnson announced that he had contracted HIV in 1991 and retired briefly from the NBA, but returned to play in the All-Star Game of 1992 and to play for the Lakers in 1996 for 32 games before retiring for good.
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the cause of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV is spread through bodily fluids, and affects the ability of the immune sy
stem to fight infection. Therefore, symptoms of HIV and AIDS include conditions that would not normally develop in an individual with a healthy immune system. These usually stem from bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections.
After announcing that he had contracted HIV, Johnson began the Magic Johnson Foundation to raise awareness and "help educate all people about what [HIV] is about", and to show the public that HIV is not only a threat for drug addicts and homosexuals. Johnson takes combination therapy to prevent his HIV from becoming AIDS; GlaxoSmithKline's Trizivir and Abbott's Kaletra. His doctors say that his superb physical condition may be a factor in his continued wellness, and he and his family also credit God and an excellent diet.
The FDA recently sent a warning letter to Abbott Laboratories, however, citing “serious violations” in its distribution of a promotional DVD featuring an interview with Johnson about his experiences with Kaletra. According to the letter, the violations include appearing to “suggest that Kaletra is safer and more effective than has been demonstrated by substantial evidence or substantial clinical experience, and encourage use in circumstances other than those for which the drug has been shown to be safe and effective." The DVD packaging also included an outdated version of the FDA-approved product label.
The FDA further said the DVD appeared to be accompanied by an outdated version of the FDA-approved product label.
The FDA warned Abbott about its failure to convey the serious risks of Kaletra, continuing, "The FDA is not aware of substantial evidence or substantial clinical experience to support effectiveness for five or more years of treatment with Kaletra in treatment-experienced adults. The personal experience of a Kaletra patient, such as Magic Johnson, does not constitute such evidence."
An Abbott spokesman has said that use of the DVD was discontinued earlier this year.
