John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (1917–1963), 35th President of the United States—JFK seemed to be the personification of vigorous youth, strength, and virility, but in fact he was chronically ill and constantly in pain. White House doctors treated him for Addison's disease, thyroid insufficiency, inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcers, prostatitis, osteoporosis, a collapsed vertebra. And, yes, asthma and allergies, too; triggered in particular by dogs and horses.
He spent most of the 1935-36 school year out in Arizona, where he could both recuperate from hepatitis and get some respite from asthma. Moving to a sunny, dry climate is still the treatment of choice for many asthmatics.

He often used amphetamines to control asthma symptoms. , a bronchial dilator and inhaler with nearly a third of a gram of amphetamine sulfate, was available over-the-counter in those days, and methamphetamines in general were used widely during WW II by the American and British military, Japanese Kamikaze pilots, and even Adolf Hitler. But in 1954 amphetamine sales became illegal except by prescription, and JFK, a strong supporter of controls, became a registered user. The notorious physician “Dr. Feelgood” used to give him shots containing vitamins, steroids, and amphetamines in dangerously large doses.
