Mike McCready
Mike McCready (1966—) Lead guitarist of legendary rock band Pearl Jam. When most rock guitarists stand up to say, "my name is X and I…" they're usually about to 'fess up to some mind-boggling drug and/or alcohol abuse at an AA meeting.
But Mike McCready's story was different. The crowd was stunned when he said from the stage, "My name's Mike McCready, and I suffer from Crohn's disease…"
He'd been diagnosed with the chronic condition 20 years earlier, he said, suffering severe abdominal pain and debilitating attacks of diarrhea. Although he'd occasionally had to race off the stage with an attack, he'd managed to keep his secret—right up until the time he decided to bring some much-needed awareness to the painfully embarrassing disease that most often starts in the alr
eady awkward teenage years.
Since then, he's continued to put the spotlight on Crohn's by supporting events like the Northwest chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation's annual "You Gotta Have Guts" run.
