Teri Garr
Teri Garr (December 11, 1944—) American actress. Teri Garr is well known for her Academy Award-nominated role in the Dustin Hoffman film Tootsie; what's not so well known is that she began noticing some disturbing physical symptoms during the filming in New York City. It took quite a few doctors and a very long time to diagnose her condition correctly, but in 2002 she announced that she had had Multiple Sclerosis for 25 years.
Since going public she's become a leading advocate for raising awareness for the condition and developing new treatments for the disease. She's also served as spokesperson for the drug Rebif. "There are several drugs out right now that can't stop multiple sclerosis, but they can slow it way down," she said in a 2003 interview, noting that MS drugs don't c
ome without side effects. "They…made me puff up like a balloon. So I looked horrible. I hated that."
Garr has put the comedic talent we’ve all loved in films such as The Young Frankenstein to good use, cracking jokes about her condition instead of sitting around getting depressed. Sure, she'll talk with fellow MS patients and their families about symptoms—extreme fatigue that comes out of nowhere, the stumbling, the trouble she has controlling her right hand—but then she'll add, "Another big problem is memory loss." Pause. "Now, what was I talking about?" She's confused, though, if her doctor asks delicately about sexual functions. "I don't know," she sighs. "I haven't been invited to any lately."
In 2006 she suffered a brain aneurysm. She made a full recovery and despite the toll that both MS and the physical effects of her MS and aneurysm have taken, Garr continues her efforts to inspire and educate people affected by MS, working with such organizations as Women Against Multiple Sclerosis (WAMS) and the National MS Society.
