Common Uses:

Glimepiride is an anti-diabetic medication of the sulfonylurea order administered with appropriate diet and exercise regime to control increasing blood sugar levels. Administered mainly in patients with non-insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes.

Off Label Uses:

Currently there are no universally accepted off-label uses of glimepiride.

Side Effects:
Some of the side effects of Glimepiride include nausea and mild stomach disorders.

Other side effects of Glimepiride include yellowing eyes or skin, signs of infection, tiredness, dark-colored urine, abdominal pain, easy bleeding, mood changes, sudden increase in weight, and seizures.

In addition to the above Glimipride can cause hypoglycemia.

Allergic reactions to Glimepiride also could occur where symptoms include rashes, dizziness, itching, and dyspnea.

Cautions / Warnings:

Glimepiride is not advisable for people with metabolic conditions like diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with liver conditions, thyroid disease, renal conditions, and hormonal conditions that invovle the adrenal glands, pitutary insufficiency, SIADH syndrome SIADH-syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, hyponatremia must consult their physicians prior to commencing on Glimepiride.

One might experience blurred vision or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar levels and it is advisable to exercise a lot of caution while driving or oeperating any electronic equipment or machinery.

It is also advisable to limint alcohol consumption while on Glimepiride.

Glimepiride could increase photosensitivity therefore one must avoid extended exposure in the sun or use an effective sunscreen, shades etc.

Caution needs to be exercised while administering this medication in elderly people because they could be more sensitive to its effects, especially hypoglycemia.

Pregnant woomen and nursing mothers need to consult their private practitioners prior to commencing on Glimepiride.

Drug Interactions:
Glimepiride or Amaryl can interact with several medications. Some of the medications that could cause glimepiride interactions include:

Beta blockers, such as metoprolol, propranolol, InnoPran XL, labetalol, and carvedilol.

Antifungal medications like fluconazole, ketoconazole, and miconazole.

Decongestants like phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine.

Seizure medications like carbamazepine, fosphenytoin, phenobarbital, and phenytoin.

Chloramphenicol and Clarithromycin

Corticosteroids like: Betamethasone, Cortisone, Dexamethasone,
Fludrocortisone, Hydrocortisone, Methylprednisolone, Prednisolone,
Prednisone, and Triamcinolone.

Disopyramide and diuretics like: Acetazolamide, Amiloride, Bumetanide,
Chlorothiazide, Chlorthalidone, Ethacrynic acid, Furosemide, Hydrochlorothiazide,
Metolazone, Torsemide, Triamterene.

Estrogens and Fluoroquinolone antibiotics like: Ciprofloxacin,
Gatifloxacin, Levofloxacin, Moxifloxacin, Norfloxacin, Ofloxacin.

Fluoxetine, Isoniazid, Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), including:
Isocarboxazid
Phenelzine
Rasagiline
Selegiline
Tranylcypromine

Niacin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)like:

Ibuprofen
Naproxen
Diclofenac
Indomethacin
Nabumetone
Oxaprozin
Celecoxib
Meloxicam
Etodolac
Ketoprofen
Ketorolac

Oral contraceptives or birth control pills

Phenothiazine medications, including:

Chlorpromazine
Fluphenazine
Perphenazine
Promethazine
Thioridazine
Trifluoperazine

Rifampin or rifapentine

Salicylates, such as aspirin, choline magnesium trisalicylate, diflunisal, and salsalate.

Sulfonamides "sulfa drugs", like sulfadiazine, sulfadoxine, sulfamethoxazole, and sulfisoxazole.

Thyroid medications like levothyroxine, and liothyronine.

Warfarin.

I was changed from AVAVDARYL to GLIMPERIDE and it took my ass down to a Blood Sugar level of 21.The doctor never checked my records or and reference questions. The Jerk almost killed m e. It took 5 techs to get a shot in my arm. lifted two gown men over my head and kicked a third off the bed. I don.t ever want to go thru that again. Only a few can relate to it but they will understand throughly. Its as close to hell as you can get..As Martin Luther King said "He had seen over the mountain "I can dam well assure you . I also saw over it. and didnt think I'd bee back.. W Moring

I take it along with Actos once a day and glucophage XR and all together they seem to do the job. My blood sugars are never quite as low as the target rates but I actually feel dizzy and crumby when I am within the 70-120 range for my blood sugars. I believe my blood sugar level should actually be slightly higher than the average person because I feel better when they are around 120-160. I know this is not the accepted view but that is how I feel.
