The generic name of this medication is sumatriptan succinate and the brand name is Imitrex. It is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.

The active ingredients of this medication are sumatriptan succinate and naproxen sodium. The inactive ingredients include; croscarmellose sodium; dibasic calcium phosphate; magnesium stearate; microcrystalline cellulose; and sodium bicarbonate.

It is primarily used in the treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura (for example, flashing lights; wavy lines; and dark spots).

Common Uses:

This medication is used in the treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura (for example flashing lights; wavy lines; and/or dark spots).

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Burning;
Dizziness;
Drowsiness;
Feeling of heaviness or pressure;
Muscle aches;
Numbness or tingling of the skin;
Sick feeling;
Tingling;
Tiredness;
Warm/hot sensation.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people that have:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
A history of ischemic heart disease like angina or heart attack; coronary artery disease (CAD); or other moderate-to-severe heart problems;
Uncontrolled high blood pressure;
Severe liver problems;
Certain forms of migraines like hemiplegic; basilar.

Not advisable in pregnant women or those that are planning on becoming pregnant.

Drug Interactions:
MAOIs (eg, phenelzine);
Ergot derivatives (eg, dihydroergotamine, methysergide) or other serotonin 5-HT 1 receptor agonists (eg, eletriptan, rizatriptan);
Serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) (eg, duloxetine).

22 Aug 2010	Imitrex worked for me when nothing else would. If I didn't take it as soon as the headache started then it would not work. 21 Dec 2009	This was a very expensive drug that did absolutely nothing for me. It didn't prevent an oncoming migraine when taken at onset, nor did it dull the pain once the migraine was full blown.
