Warnings
The generic name of this medication is insulin glargine and brand names are Lantus; Lantus OptiClik Cartridge; and Lantus Solostar Pen.
The active ingredient is insulin glagine and inactive ingredients are glycerol; m-cresol; zinc; and water for injection.
It is primarily used in the treatment of Type I and Type II diabetes.
Common Uses:
This medication is used in the treatment of Type 1 (insulin-dependent) and Type 2 (non insulin-dependent) diabetes.
Off Label Uses:
None noted currently.
Side Effects:
Allergic reactions like pruritis or rashes;
Early-onset diabetic retinopathy;
Higher incidence of malignancies or cancer;
Hypoglycemia.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended in people that have:
Allergic reactions to insulin glargine;
Liver or kidney disease.
Not advisable in pregnant women and nursing mothers.
Drug Interactions:
Albuterol or Proventil; Ventolin;
Betablockers like atenolol; carvedilol; labetalol; metoprolol; nadolol;
Clonidine or Catapres;
Guanethidine or Ismelin;
Reserpine.

i started on 6 unites am now up to 20 test reading have not changed started getting very bad neck shoulder arm pain suffered from this before after r t a many years ago but this is the much worse than it has ever been more tired have no energy the pain wakes me up at night

For me Lantus has given me much better basal control of my blood sugars compared with Insulatard and has eliminated severe night time hypos, which were frightening even after 50 years of being T1 diabetic.

Horrible reactions to Lantus. Flu symptoms(leg pain was unbelievable), burning in hands, worst fatigue I've ever experienced, brain fog., mood swings, pain in neck and shoulders, lower back ache in kidneys. Blood sugars were better, A1Cs excellent, but I just couldn't live like that. Tried Levimir, not much difference. I stopped taking it. Has anyone experienced cracking, popping in neck? Doctor denies that any of this could be from Lantus! Also had horrendous side effects from actos.
