Rilutek is the brand name and riluzole is the generic name and active ingredient of this medication.

Inactive ingredients include anhydrous colloidal silica; anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate; croscarmellose sodium; microcrystalline cellulose; snf magnesium stearate.

It belongs to the benzothiazole class of drugs.

Used in the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Riluzole prolongs survival and/or time to tracheostomy.

Recommended dosage is 50 mg every 12 hours. Higher daily doses could lead to adverse reactions.

Common Uses:

Used in the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Functions by extending the survival time to tracheostomy.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Abdominal pain;
Abnormal skin sensations around the mouth;
Chills;
Cough;
Diarrhea;
Dizziness;
Drowsiness;
Feeling of spinning motions;
Fever;
Headache;
Irregular heartbeat;
Loss of appetite;
Muscle weakness;
Nausea;
Painful urination;
Pneumonia;
Severe allergic reactions like hives, dyspnea or difficult breathing, swelling of facial area including mouth, lips, and/or tongue, tightness in the chest region;
Swelling of hands and feet;
Vomiting;
Weakness;
Yellowish discoloration of eyes and skin.

Cautions / Warnings:

Driving and operating machinary not advisable while on this medication because it could cause drowsiness.
Alchol intake should be limited.
Not recommended in pregnant women and nursing mothers.
