Mel Gibson (1956—) Gibson, Aussie star of multiple films like the "Lethal Weapon" series, "Mad Max," and "The Year of Living Dangerously," is known for making the hugely popular religious movie “The Passion of the Christ.”
He’s also notorious for a racist rant during a drunk-driving traffic stop. Turns out that may have stemmed from bipolar disorder. “I had really good highs but some very low lows," Gibson said in 2002. "I found out recently I'm manic depressive."
Gibson started drinking at the age of 13; took a year off from movie-making to get over his alcohol problem in 1984 after a drunk-driving incident; and then was still drinking five pints of beer for breakfast while filming—without apparently showing any ill-effects.
In his mid-thirties, he told Diane S
awyer, he tried to fix his problems. “I checked into a few places and, you know, sorted myself out. I didn't make a big noise about it.”
He apparently even considered jumping out of a window at one time.
“I was looking down thinking, man, this is just easier this way. I don't know … you have to be mad, you have to be insane to despair in that way. But that is the height of spiritual bankruptcy. There's nothing left. But it's … that wow, what a waste, and people do that is so sad. Whenever I hear of suicides, I just want to die, you know, I want to cry and it's … because there's something better if they can just hang on a little longer, you know.”
He himself finally reached rock bottom. “I just hit my knees, I just said "Help", you know. And then I began to meditate on it, you know, and that's in the gospel, you know. I read all those again and I remember reading bits of them when I was younger. Pain is the precursor to change, which is great, that's the good news.”
