Greg Louganis
Greg Louganis (1960—), American Olympic diver. Louganis was awarded the James E. Sullivan Award from the Amateur Athletic Union for being the most outstanding amateur athlete in the US in 1984, and he went on to have a successful career as a diver. He placed second at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal in the tower event when he was just sixteen years old, and won his first world title two years later. He attended the University of Miami and the University of California at Irvine on diving scholarships.
In 1988 Louganis earned the title of “Athlete of the Year” by ABC’s Wide World of Sports due to his performance in Seoul Olympics. During the preliminary dives, he suffered a concussion from hitting his head on the board, yet he overcame his injury in the finals and won the go
ld medal.
Also in 1988 Louganis was diagnosed with HIV after contracting the virus from a companion. At the time he thought it was a death sentence, and wanted to lock himself away and wait to die, but his doctor cousin convinced him to stay active. “And I was very thankful for that, because I was able to focus on my diving, which was very positive, rather than on this cloud that potentially loomed over my head.”
Louganis advocates for HIV-positive individuals to maintain a healthy routine of physical exercise and an optimistic outlook. In addition to his treatment, he considers his biggest priority is to alleviate stress by making it to the gym, spinning or doing yoga, and taking care of himself.
He is openly gay, and has told his story in several written and video publications. He narrated a movie about his life, starring Mario Lopez, entitled “Breaking The Surface: The Greg Louganis Story” which aired on Showtime. He and his dogs frequently participate in canine agility competitions, and he often speaks publicly about his condition.
