Jackie Joyner-Kersee (1963—) Olympic track medalist—Jackie Joyner-Kersee's breathing difficulties were first diagnosed as bronchitis, then mononucleosis; her mother used to tell her to just go sit in a corner and calm down when she couldn't breathe. Even after she was correctly diagnosed as a freshman at UCLA she didn't take the disease seriously, refusing to take her medicine in part because she thought of asthma as a weakness that people who ran hard and jumped high couldn't possibly have.

Although she landed in the emergency room several times, she'd feel so good after treatment that she'd skip her medication, thinking she was 'cured.'
