John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy
John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (1917–1963), 35th President of the United States—JFK seemed to be the personification of vigorous youth, strength, and virility, but in fact he was chronically ill and constantly in pain. White House doctors treated him for Addison's disease, thyroid insufficiency, inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcers, prostatitis, osteoporosis, a collapsed vertebra. And, yes, asthma and allergies, too; triggered in particular by dogs and horses.
He spent most of the 1935-36 school year out in Arizona, where he could both recuperate from hepatitis and get some respite from asthma. Moving to a sunny, dry climate is still the treatment of choice for many asthmatics.

He often used amphetamines to control asthma symptoms. ine-side-effects.aspx">Benzedrine, a bronchial dilator and inhaler with nearly a third of a gram of amphetamine sulfate, was available over-the-counter in those days, and methamphetamines in general were used widely during WW II by the American and British military, Japanese Kamikaze pilots, and even Adolf Hitler. But in 1954 amphetamine sales became illegal except by prescription, and JFK, a strong supporter of controls, became a registered user. The notorious physician “Dr. Feelgood” used to give him shots containing vitamins, steroids, and amphetamines in dangerously large doses. Eventually legitimate doctors intervened, afraid for his life. Asthma control has come a long way.

Health tip of the day:
You might be able to avoid the H1N1 virus, regular flu and the common cold this winter by exercising every day. Exercise gives your immune system a boost, says Dr. David Nieman, director of Appalachian State University's Human Performance Lab in North Carolina. According to Dr. Neiman, two kinds of immune cells circulate more freely in the blood when you excercise, neutralizing pathogens. The effect only lasts for a few hours, but the benefits are cumulative, adding up to a generally stronger immune system. People who walked "briskly" for 45 minutes a day, at least five daysa week for 12 to 15 weeks, reduced their sick days by 25 to 50 percent compared to couch potato controls in his study.
