Treatment Information
Tamoxifen is a nonsteroidal antiestrogen, which is administered orally and is part of a set of medications referred to as SERMs or selective estrogen receptor modulators. These have both estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects. Tamoxifen has anti-estrogenic effects on the breasts and has estrogen-like effects on bones, working to strengthen them.

The inactive ingredients of tamoxifen citrat include carboxymethylcellulose calcium, magnesium stearate, mannitol and starch. Tamoxifen citrate is the active ingredient and it is available in 10 mg and 20 mg tablets.

Tamoxifen is used in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer in women and men and as a form of adjuvant treatment of breast cancer. It also decreases the risk of breast cancer in high risk women who are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

26 Jan 2011 I have been on it for seven months and have hot flashes every night. I wake up every 2hours my joints are soar anytime I am not moving for more than one hour. I have lost most of my sex drive and orgasms have gone away. I seem to get bladder infections more easily. Have 4more years to go. Not sure if I am going to continue since some of the studies show only about taking it not. Not taking it. I'm only 49 and want a good quality of life now. Studies show that the tamoxifen shuts receptors off and they will not come back on. Not good if you want a sex life.

15 Sep 2009 I ENDED MY PRESCRIBED 5-YEAR PERIOD OF TAKING TAMOXIFEN (100 MG PER DAY) APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR AGO. RIGHT AFTER STOPPING THE MEDICATION, I STARTED EXHIBITING SIGNS OF ELEVATED INTRACRANIAL PRESSURE OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID (CSF). MY EYE DOCTOR NOTICED THIS DURING MY ANNUAL EYE EXAM, AND THEN SENT ME TO A NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGIST FOR MONITORING. DURING THE LAST 8 MONTHS I HAVE HAD 3 LUMBAR PUNCTURES, HEAD CT SCAN, HEAD MRI, THEN HEAD MRI WITH VENOGRAPHY (TO RULE OUT A BRAIN TUMOR), TWO EYE SURGERIES (OPTIC NERVE SHEATH DECOMPRESSIONS), ONE BEHIND EACH EYE, IN ORDER TO RELIEVE INTRACRANIAL PRESSURE. STILL HAVE THE PRESSURE PROBLEM (SOMETIMES CALLED "PSEUDOTUMOR CEREBRI," OR " IDEOPATHIC INTRACRANIAL HYPERTENSION," OR "IIH"), AND NOW I MIGHT HAVE TO UNDERGO A VP SHUNT PROCEDURE TO CONTINUALLY DRAIN OFF EXCESS CSF FROM MY BRAIN. I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN KNOWING IF ANYONE ELSE HAS EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. IN TRYING TO RESEARCH THIS, I FIND STATEMENTS ONLINE ABOUT TAMOXIFEN SOMETIMES CAUSING THE ELEVATED IIH AND THE ASSOCIATED SWELLING AROUND THE OPTIC NERVES, BUT I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY DATA SUPPORTING THIS THIS CLAIM. DOES ANYONE HAVE FURTHER INFO ON THIS?

08 Aug 2009 Since I am taking it after breast cancer surgery for prophylactic purposes, there is no way of rating the ultimate effectiveness of the drug; I was only diagnosed and operated on a few months ago. This is not the only anti-cancer treatment I am on. However, I believe in its curative powers and am lucky to be experiencing no side effects.
