Yaz (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol)) is the brand name and it is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals.

Yaz oral contraceptive regimen consists of 24 active film coated tablets each containing 3 mg of drospirenone and 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol stabilized by betadex as a clathrate (molecular inclusion complex) and 4 inert film coated tablets. Other ingredients are lactose monohydrate NF, corn starch NF, magnesium stearate NF, hypromellose USP, talc USP, titanium dioxide USP, ferric oxide pigment, red NF.

Yaz is an oral contraceptive pill that consists of estrogen and progestin. The drug provides effective prevention of pregnancy by stopping ovulation. In addition to this, it also changes the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. Yaz alters the lining of the uterus or the endometrium), making it less receptive to an embryo.

Common Uses:

Yaz(drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol) is a prescription medication used in the prevention of pregnancy. It is also used in the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and acne.

Off Label Uses:

Used in the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding, irregular menstrual periods, and painful menstrual periods.

Side Effects:
Decreased sex drive
Headaches
Increased appetite
Breakthrough bleeding or spotting
Vaginal discharge
Vaginal yeast infections
Nausea and vomiting
Weight gain
High blood potassium or hyperkalemia.
Signs of a blood clot in the leg, like pain in the calf, leg cramps, leg or foot swelling.
Signs of a blood clot in the lungs, like shortness of breath, sharp chest pain,
coughing up blood.
Chest pain or heaviness which could be indicative of a heart attack.
Sudden loss of vision or vision changes which can be a sign of a blood clot in the eye.
Signs of a stroke.
Signs of liver damage like yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
dark urine and upper-right abdominal pain.
Depression or other emotional changes.
Migraines.
Breast lumps.
Unusual vaginal bleeding that does not improve within a few months of starting this medication.
High blood pressure or hypertension.
High cholesterol;
Signs of allergic reactions, like unexplained rashes, hives, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Cautions / Warnings:

Physicians do not recommend this medication if there is adrenal insufficiency,
if the patient is a nursing mother, if there is cancer or history of cancer, chest pain, depression, diabetes, gallbladder disease, history of blood clot or a clotting disorder, history of heart attack or stroke, have an upcoming surgery, heart valve problems, high blood pressure or hypertension, high cholesterol, kidney disease, like kidney failure or renal failure, liver disease such as liver failure, cirrhosis, hepatitis or liver tumors, migraines, smoke cigarettes, unexplained vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin during a prior pregnancy or oral contraceptive use.

ACE inhibitors such as Benazepril, Captopril, Enalapril, Fosinopril, Lisinopril, Quinapril, Ramipril
Aminoglutethimide
Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
Antibiotics
Aprepitant
Atorvastatin
Barbiturates
Certain seizure medications such as carbamazepine, felbamate, lamotrigine Carbazepine, Phenytoin and Topiramate
Cyclosporine
Heparin
Modafinil
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs
Potassium products such as potassium chloride potassium citrate, potassium gluconate, potassium phosphate and salt substitutes that are used to flavor food.
Potassium-sparing diuretics such as:
Amiloride (Midamor®) or amiloride-HCTZ (Moduretic®)
Eplerenone (Inspra®)
Spironolactone (Aldactone™) or spironolactone-HCTZ (Aldactazide®)
Triamterene (Dyrenium®) or triamterene-HCTZ (Dyazide®, Maxzide®)

Protease inhibitors such as:

Amprenavir (Agenerase®)
Atazanavir (Reyataz®)
Fosamprenavir (Lexiva®)
Indinavir (Crixivan®)
Nelfinavir (Viracept®)
Ritonavir (Norvir®)

Selegiline (Eldepryl®, Emsam®, Zelapar®)
St. John's wort
Theophylline (Uniphyl®, Theocron®, TheoCap®, Theo-24®, Elixophyllin®)

15 Feb 2012	I took Yaz for two years and as a fair warning I would never take this birth control. I was prescribed to this as a way to clear up my face of acne (which it did) and it was "new" at the time. The first months were great, I was happy and my periods light but after around 8 months I saw my personality and self withering away. I was empty but continued taking it. . I suffered extreme migraines and after the conscious decision to get off I bled heavily for two weeks and then didn't have a period for 8 months. Scary! 23 Jan 2012	Since I started taking Yaz, I am more emotional and feel depressed. I use to be a very happy go lucky person...I dont even recognise myself anymore. My friends dont recognise me anymore. I am not going to take my tablet tomorrow as I think it is the Yaz causing it. I will schedule an appointment with the doctor as soon as I can. I cry for no apparent reason and feel angry about the silliest things. —Posted by gone mad... 11 Aug 2011	I took YAZ for five days. On the fifth day I became overwhelmed with what felt like uncontrollable suicidal thoughts. I have never in my 34 years of life experienced depression or feelings of wanting to take my life. I am a psychotherapist and I know what is normal and what is not. 08 Aug 2011	Since I have switched from Yasmin to Yaz I have noticed; constant headaches, fatigue, bloating, constant thirst, lack of sex drive, moody, and other symptoms. I do not recommend this pill.
