Neuralgia treatment
Description
Neuralgia is characterized by a chronic sensation of pain burning or stabbing) that follows the path of a specific nerve, typically as a result of degenerative nerve damage. Although neuralgia may occur at any age, it is rare and most prevalent in people over the age of 50, and women are more susceptible than men. There are various classifications of neuralgia, depending on the nerve involved, th
e most common of which is trigeminal neuralgia, characterized by intense, sporadic pain in the face. Although it can be associated with other neural-degenerative diseases, the most common cause of trigeminal neuralgia is believe to be pressure on the trigeminal nerve from facial blood vessels. Occipital neuralgia results from irritation or injury to the occipital nerves in the head, causing pain in the neck and back of the head, or behind the ears. Postherpetic neuralgia is the easiest to diagnose because it arises in areas of a shingles outbreak, and is characterized by lasting pain after the shingles-associated skin rash has cleared. The rarest form of neuralgia is glossopharyngeal, which occurs later in life but is more common in men. Linked to compression of the glossopharyngeal nerve, the exact cause is unknown, although it is best identified by pain in the back of the throat, tongue, and in the tonsils.

Causes
Although triggers for neuralgia are location-specific and pain can be triggered by any number of external stimuli (even a cool breeze can cause intense pain in someone suffering from occipital neuralgia), nerve damage is often at the root of neuralgia symptoms. The most commonly diagnosed sources of neuralgia include nerve inflammation or compression- usually by a muscle or blood vessel, and occas
ionally by a tumor. In the case of postherpetic neuralgia, the chickenpox virus remains dormant in nerve cells and later reactivates, causing skin rash and persistent pain. The mechanisms in the nervous system primarily attributed to neuralgia include: overly-sensitive receptors, cross-signaling between small and large fibers, malfunctions in the ion transfer along nervous pathways, or damage in the central system (brain and spinal cord) that "misreads" a peripheral signal. Unfortunately, the cause of neuralgia in patients often remains un-diagnosed, because locating the faulty nerve pathway is not possible.

Prevention
Unfortunately, there is no real way to guard against neuralgia. Because it often arises as a result of nerve damage, refraining from activities that could involve injury to the spine, such as whiplash, is the only way to possibly circumvent the condition.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms for neuralgia are varied, but involve either a constant, burning pain, or a short, stabbing pain that occurs intermittently. The episodes, which occur only for a few seconds to a few minutes at a time, can be debilitating painful and can be triggered by something as light as a brief contact with the skin. Although there are distinct periods of remission and no lasting paralysis or
loss of sensation, attacks are sometimes precluded by a more lasting throbbing sensation. Additionally, pain rarely spans the body; rather, it is concentrated in one region (for instance, the neck or a single side of the head).

Rare Symptoms
Rare symptoms for neuralgia include muscle spasms, and a slowed or even stopped heartbeat. Also, there can sometimes be localized numbness of the skin where painful attacks occur.
Traditional Treatment
Anticonvulsants, antidepressants, anti-spasticity drugs, painkillers, lidocaine skin patches, electrical nerve stimulation. Surgical options: microvascular decompression, balloon compression, glycerol injection, severing the nerve, radiation.
Alternative Treatment
Hypnosis, electric nerve stimulation, biofeedback, or a diet high in protein, fats, and carbohydrates. Also, acupuncture, B-complex vitamins, Zanthoxylum clava herculisis (Toothache Tree), or Matricaria recutita (German Chamomile). Other herbs include Arctium lappa (Burdock) and Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil's Claw).
