Brain Trauma treatment

Description
Traumatic brain injury, or concussion, is an injury to the brain, usually by impact, that alters and diminishes normal brain function.
Causes
Traumatic brain injury, or concussion, is caused by a severe injury, or blow, to the head. As the blow to the head occurs, the brain moves back and forth inside the skull, causing damage and possible bruising, swelling, and blood clotting in the brain.
Prevention
In order to prevent traumatic brain injury, it is important to wear protective headwear such as a helmet when participating in risk-prone activities. Following the initial head injury, the risk of severe traumatic brain injury increases with each consecutive injury.
Common Symptoms
The most common symptoms of brain injury include nausea, headache, dizziness, dilated pupils of each eye, excessive sleepiness, inability to concentrate, sensitivity to light and noise, memory loss, and sensory problems.
Rare Symptoms
Rare symptoms of brain injury, depending on the severity of the injury, include loss of consciousness, seizure or convulsions, unusual behavior such as anger, extreme confusion, , depression, insomnia, fatigue, or the inability to awaken from sleep.
Traditional Treatment
Conventional treatments for brain injury include prescription medications such as muscle relaxers, pain medications, anti-depressants, anti-convulsants, diuretics, muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety medications and coma-inducing medications.
Alternative Treatment
Alternative treatments for traumatic brain injury include physical therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, occupational therapy, speech/language pathology, biofeedback, acupressure, chiropractic, cranial-sacral therapy and supplements such as lipoic acid.

Research and Development
Current research has just developed a brain scan that can determine the specific location of brain damage in traumatic brain injury patients. Ongoing research is also working to increase brain injury prevention by improving helmets for athletes.
