Gingivitis treatment

Description
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums and may be plaque induced or non-plaque induced. It is typically a very common and mild form of periodontal disease, but can lead to more severe gum disease if left untreated.
Causes
The primary cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene, although other conditions such as medication, infections, disease, hormonal changes, poor nutrition, smoking, stress and depression may be causes.
Prevention
Prevention of gingivitis and other forms of oral disease is primarily achieved by maintaining good oral hygiene - brushing at least twice a day and use of floss and mouth wash.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms may include, but are not limited to swollen gums exhibiting a bright red or purple appearance, bleeing gums (even when brushing gently), tender but generally painless gums, receding gums, bad breath.
Traditional Treatment
General treatment is aimed at establishing and maintaining good oral hygeine, but in cases where symptoms persist, antibiotics (e.g. amoxcillin), topical steriods (e.g. Oracort - triamcinolone acetonide),
Alternative Treatment
Nutrients such as Coenzyme Q10, calcium, folic acid, and various herbal treatments (chamomile, tea tree oil, clove and camu-camu)
