Thrombosis (Blood Clot) treatment

Description
Thrombosis is marked by the formation of blood clots within blood vessels, which can obstruct the flow of blood to vital organs and tissues. If left untreated, these blood clots can dislodge and travel to the lungs, heart, or brain resulting in devastating outcomes. Causes
Thrombosis can be a result of poor blood flow, hypercoagulability, and injury to the vessel walls as a result of surgery or trauma. Prevention
Leg exercises to increase blood flow is a good way to prevent blood clot formation. Also, a healthy diet is vital in regulating one's fat intake and vitamin K intake. Additionally, measures such as taking anticoagulants and wearing compression stockings can prevent blood clots from forming.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms are commonly seen in the legs and include: swelling in the affected area, a sense of warmth, tenderness, and fatigue in the area, red/discolored skin, and visible surface veins.
Rare Symptoms
If clots dislodge and travel to major organs, then more serious situations would include: a heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or a stroke. These associated symptoms include: chest pain, change in consciousness, unexplained pain or swelling, difficulty breathing, and coughing up blood.
Traditional Treatment
Anticoagulant treatments typically are used to combat thrombosis in which these medications prevent new clots from forming and stop the growth of already existing clots. Compression stockings can be used to improve blood flow in the legs.
Alternative Treatment
In some instances, thrombolytics may be used to dissolve the blood clots in patients. Also, some patients may opt for a vena cava filter, which acts to catch emboli before they reach the lungs and cause pulmonary embolisms.
