Osteoarthritis treatment

Description

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis, is the most common form of arthritis and is a result of wear of the protective cartilage of the bones particularly affecting the joints causing pain. It can be developed at any stage but appears more frequently among mature people, especially women.

Causes

The general cause of Osteoarthritis is pressure on the joints which results in the degeneration of the cartilage. This can be due to many factors including repeated stress on joints, disease, injury, obesity, genetically inherited factors, etc.

Prevention

As Osteoarthritis usually arises due to lifestyle factors, it is common and difficult to avoid. However, avoiding repeated tension on joints and careful control of weight will reduce likelihood of contracting the condition.

Common Symptoms

Aches and pains concentrated at the joints are common in those suffering from Osteoarthritis, as well as swelling and and redness in the area. Symptoms tend to further develop causing difficulties in movement and joint deformity.

Traditional Treatment

There is no cure for Osteoarthiritis at the moment, and treatments are therefore symptom relieving rather than curing. Common treatments are pain killers, physiotherapy, exercise.

Alternative Treatment

Acupuncture, herbal treatment, braces, surgery, steroids, viscosupplementation.
