Crohn's Disease treatment
Description
Crohn's disease refers to a chronic, recurring inflammation of the Gastrointestinal Tract. The swelling associated with this disease can occur anywhere from the esophagus to the anus, but is most prominent in the ileum of the small intestines. The affected organ suffers from deep swelling that extends within its superfial lining. Severe discomfort to moderate pain occurs as a result of this. Recur
ring diarrhea is also characteristic to this disease; inflamed instines empty at an abnormal pace.

Causes
Currently, there is no proven cause of Crohn's disease; however, there are several valid theories. One theory describes the disease as being a sort of auto-immune disease. Our immune systems are comprised of cells and proteins that function to protect our bodies from pathogens and tumor cells. When our antibodies detect foreign invaders, our bodies respond by dispatching white blood cells to the s
ite of 'invasion.' Researchers hypothesize that what may happen in Crohn's disease is that the body perceives the contents within its digestive tract (bacteria, foods, or other substances) as harmful pathogens. The body responds as it would to actual pathogens.

Prevention
There is no way to prevent this disease. People with Crohn's disease are urged to eat a nutritious diet to promote good health and healing.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms may include weight loss, abdominal discomfort or pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, arthritis, and skin problems.
Rare Symptoms
Profuse rectal bleeding can cause anemia.
Traditional Treatment
Conventional treatments for Crohn's disease includes medication such as steroids or cortisones taken to relieve its associated symptoms. Drugs containing mesalamine are often prescribed to reduce inflammation. Immunosupressive drugs are sometimes prescribed as treatment for Crohn's disease. 6-mercaptopurine and azathioprine are two medications that are commonly used in this approach.
Alternative Treatment
Immunosupressive drugs are sometimes prescribed as treatment for Crohn's disease. 6-mercaptopurine and azathioprine are two medications that are commonly used in this approach. These drugs suppress the body's immune reaction.

Research and Development
In accordance to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, there are several completed and ongoing studies on Crohn's disease to not only possibly prevent this disease, but to facilitate the lives of the people who are affected by this. The studies majority of the studies conducted have to do with efficacy of current treatments or potential treatments. Researchers are also looking into what effect,
if any, nutrition, stress or external environmental factors may have on Crohn's disease.
