Edema treatment

Description

Edema is swelling of body parts due to the extra fluid. Although Edema can affect any part of the body but it is usually noticed in hands, arms, feet, ankles, and legs.

Causes

The swelling occurs because the tiny blood vessels in the body (capillaries) leak fluid. The leakage can be due to high pressure in the capillaries from lowered levels of serum albumin, a protein in the blood. When the body detects the leak in capillaries then the kidneys tries to retain more water and sodium. This process causes the capillaries to leak more.

Prevention

The best way to prevent Edema is by doing exercise, specifically leg elevations. Low salt diets also help to prevent Edema.

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms are swelling or puffiness of the tissue under the skin, stretched and shiny skin, skin that still retain a dimple after being pressed for several seconds, and increased abdominal size.

Rare Symptoms

These are the signs and symptoms that come suddenly (not gradual), and include shortness of breath, suffocation, cough with frothy sputum and sometimes blood, and irregular heart beat.

Traditional Treatment

Treatment includes medicines that increase movement of water and sodium through the kidneys. Diuretics are used, as well as Spironolactone (Aldactone).

Alternative Treatment

Complementary therapeutic options or home remedies. Various sources that can reduce Edema are Vitamin B6, Potassium, Bananas, Cucumber.
