Eczema
Description
Eczema also referred to as atopic dermatitis occurs in conjunction with other atopic disorders like asthma; hay fever; and hives; however, it does not occur due to allergens like airborne irritants or pollen. It is more of a chronic condition with an early onset; as early as in infancy, therefore it is also referred to as infantile eczema. Atopic dermatitis or eczema is characterized by extremely
itchy, dry skin, which turns pink or red in color. It sometimes also looks like a skin rash that is generally seen in between skin folds like the arm joints, knee joints; etc. In some instances it affects the face; neck; and upper parts of the body. It is marked by constant itching and scratching by the child or person affected which makes the condition worse.

Causes
Causes are mostly genetic in nature and people with a family history of eczema are at a higher risk of inheriting this condition when compared to those without a family history of eczema. It also occurs due to hypersensitive or over reactive immune system and various environmental factors like plant allergies example poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac; extreme temperatures; constant sweating; ce
rtain medications; stress; particular types of clothes like woolens and/or silks; cosmetics; soaps; shampoos; detergents; grease; oil; and other allergens present in the surrounding environment. Another important factor that mostly triggers eczema is dryness; therefore soaps that contributing to drying should be avoided and skin should be constantly moisturized.

Prevention
Avoid clothes that have rough and scratchy texture; and tight. Woolens also need to be avoided.
Minimize or avoid regular use of cosmetics; soaps; warm water and any other chemical-based cleansing agents.
Moisturize the skin and use soaps that moisturize the skin.
Cleansers like Cetaphil and Aquanil can be used liberally.
Skin should be patted dry following bath or wash and not rubbed and this
should be followed by application of a moisturizing lotion or cream like Aquaphor; Eucerin; or Vaseline.
Avoid exposing oneself to dry air; extremely dry temperatures; chlorinated water; bubble bath etc.
Recommended using humidifier to increase moisture levels to the indoor air during winter.
Avoid contact with irritating and strong chemical-based soaps; detergents; perfumes; sprays; creams etc; and also avoid jewelry that is coated and contains chemical processing; and keep skin clean and well moisturized always.

Common Symptoms
Common symptoms of eczema include extremely dry and itchy skin that turns pink or red accompanied with small blisters; bumps; or rashes. Depending upon the type of eczema; the various symptoms associated with it can be described as follows: Atopic eczema or dermatitis is marked by highly irritated; red; dry; crusted areas on the skin with a wet look. Untreated it could lead to bacterial infections
.
Contact dermatitis is characterized by mild red-colored skin accompanied with severe blistering or rashes; if caused due to skin allergies; this condition could lead to red-colored blisters which is extremely itchy.
Hand eczema occurs mostly during winter and is seen as areas of extremely dry and cracked skin with or without discoloration.
Nummular eczema occurs as small patches of dry and irritating skin that turn round and red; crusty and/or scaly.
Asteatotic eczema normally affects the lower extremities and causes severe itchy or a stinging sensation which is painful accompanied with dry, red-colored, cracked skin sometimes with tiny bumps in the area.
Stasis dermatitis starts off as mild reddish discoloration accompanied with itching especially in the lower extremities. It is characterized by lower legs that are mildly puffy due to decreased blood circulation to the lower extremities caused due to varicose veins or decreased functioning veins, but it can be caused by leg swelling (edema) related to heart failure or kidney problems. Acute onset of reddish discoloration and tenderness to touch could be caused by microbial infection and requires medical assistance at the earliest.
Lichen simplex chronicus is characterized by the development of a thick skin rash that appears leathery accompanied with darkened skin, which is extremely itchy and scratchy and scratching worsens the condition.
Seborrheic dermatitis or seborrhea is marked by red-colored; dry and scaly skin surrounded by yellow and greasy crusts. They appear mostly on the scalp as dandruff; however can also occur in other parts of the body like the eyebrows; eyelids; ears; and skin creases especially near the nose and mouth. The part of skin affected by seborrheic dermatitis is extremely dry and itchy; however itching can only worsen the symptoms and also lead to severe burning sensation. Scalp lesions that occur in infants (cradle cap) appear yellow in color; they are greasy; however cause no discomfort.
