Angina (Chest Pain) treatment
Description
The most common type of angina is angina pectoris, or chest pain. Sudden attacks of angina that last more than 15 minutes may lead to a heart attack, which is a life threatening condition.
Causes
Angina is caused by ischemia of the heart muscle, which means that the heart muscle is not receiving adequate blood and therefore oxygen supply. The primary cause of this is arterial disease in the coronary arteries. Risk factors for angina include: age, smoking, diabetes mellitus, family history of cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia, hypertension, kidney disease, obesity, and lack of physical a
ctivity.

Prevention
One can help prevent arterial and heart disease by refraining from cigarette smoking, maintaining a healthy diet and weight, and exercising regularly. Regular testing for hypertension, rising cholesterol levels, and diabetes is also recommended.
Common Symptoms
Angina is often associated with the following symptoms: heavy feeling or pressure, tightness, burning, a choking or squeezing sensation, breathlessness, sweating, nausea, increased pulse and blood pressure. Referred pain can also occur in the upper abdomen, back, neck, jaw, shoulders, and inner upper arms (usually the left arm). Chest pain lasting only a few seconds is usually not angina, but may
be caused by heartburn or something else.
