Enlarged Prostate (BHP)
Description
Benign prostatic hyperplasia also known as BPH. Benign means non-cancerous and hyperplasia means enlargement. It is sometimes referred to as benign prostatic hypertrophy; however this is a misnomer. BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia can be described as a urological condition characterized by enlargement of the prostate gland in men. The prostate gland is located between the bladder and the ureth
ra. With age, this prostate gland develops in size or becomes enlarged. This enlargement of the prostate gland results in exerting pressure or pressing upon the surrounding bladder which stores urine and urethra through which urine passes, thereby affecting the flow of urine which becomes slow and constricted.

Causes
Benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH is normal and occurs with aging and is caused due to hormonal imbalance plus growth and development of cells. Androgens; dihydrotestosterone; and estrogens are considered to play a vital role in causing BPH. It is generally common in older men, especially over the age of 60 to 70 years.
Prevention
It is advisable to abstain from the following:
Allergy medications;
Antihistamines;
Decongestants;
Medications that contribute to difficulty urinating;
Caffeine;
Alcohol.
In addition to the above, it also helps to urinate regularly and practice double voiding to provide relief from feeling to constant fullness of the bladder.
Avoid foods which cause constipation instead includes lots of
fresh fruits and vegetables in the daily diet.
Drinking lots of water, especially around 50% of the total body weight in ounces everyday helps a lot.

Common Symptoms
Difficulty with starting to urinate, weak stream, difficulty stopping the stream also known as dribbling; constant feeling of voiding or urinating; sense of not emptying the bladder fully despite urinating, making a person want to void regularly.
Rare Symptoms
BPH might be responsible for blocking the bladder resulting in difficulty urinating. This in turn will lead to urinary retention causing infection of the bladder; gall bladder stones; and/or renal conditions including kidney damage.
Traditional Treatment
This includes home treatment; pharmacological treatment; Invasive treatment includes procedures like transurethral microwave thermotherapy or TUMT and transurethral needle ablation or TUNA; laser treatments like VLAP technique involving the Nd:YAG laser which works on the prostatic tissue; photo-selective vaporization of the prostate or PVP with the green light or KTP which involves inserting a fi
ber into the prostate and functions by vaporizing the prostatic tissue; Holmium Laser Ablation of the Prostate or HoLAP is another form of invasive treatment gaining popularity all over the world where very powerful holmium lasers are used to remove prostatic tissue with minimal bleeding; and in rare cases surgical treatment where a part of the prostate is removed via TURP or transurethral resection of the prostrate; however, very few men have severe symptoms that require surgical intervention.
Home treatment includes: double urination, where the person urinates once; rests for a while and urinates again, this way the bladder is emptied and provides relief from symptoms; home treatment also includes abstinence from alcohol and caffeinated products because they increase the frequency of urination.
Pharmacological treatment includes administration of alpha blockers like alfuzosin or Uroxatral; doxazosin or Cardura; silodosin; tamsulosin or Flomax; and terazosin or Hytrin. Other medications used include dutasteride or Avodart; finasteride or Proscar; and tolterodines.

Alternative Treatment
Natural remedies include herbal treatment with extracts of Saw palmetto from the plant serenoa repens; beta-sitosterol extracts from Africa star grass or hypoxis rooperi; cucurbita pepo seeds or pumpkin seeds; extracts from the plan urtica dioica or stinging nettle; pygeum extracts prepared from the barks of prunus Africana; and cernilton extracted from secale cereale or rye grass pollen. Amino ac
ids – The combination of glycine, alinine, and glutamic acid (200 mg of each daily) reduces urinary urgency, urinary frequency, and delayed micturition (initiation of flow). Naturopathic treatment includes flaxseed meal; flaxseed oil; and zinc picolinate. Homeopathic treatment includes: apis mellifica; causticum; chimaphilla umbellate; clematis; lycopodium; pulsatilla; sabal serrulata; staphysagria; and thuja. Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM employs acupuncture as an alternative form of treatment in treating BPH.
