One of the most bizarre uses of natural toxins involves injecting patients with botulinum, a product of the killer anaerobic bacteria your grandma used to worry about finding in her home-canned green beans. Although Botox has legitimate medical uses—fixing painful cervical dystonia, controlling pain during breast reconstruction, helping with cerebral palsy and overactive bladders—it’s far better known as a wrinkle smoother. Each year more than 3 million doses are pumped into American faces alone.
And what’s beastly about cosmetic Botox is the animal testing done on each and every batch. Botox manufacturers must check the potency of each batch by injecting roughly 100 mice with Botox until half of them die, after several days of increasing paralysis. This is known as the “lethal
dose 50 percent,” or LD50, test. Although the Humane Society continues to campaign for manufacturers to aggressively pursue a non-animal model of testing and to show greater transparency, CEOs appear uninterested and those “ageless” faces are still adorned with an ugly price tag.
