4. Get your blood pressure checked – and then rechecked

Normal blood pressure should be around 140/90 mm Hg. If your systolic pressure (the number on top) is over 140, talk to your doctor about how to lower it. High blood pressure is often a precursor to other problems, such as heart disease. If not monitored and controlled properly, it can lead to heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and premature death. There are few symptoms for hypertension, and has been called “the silent killer” because only about half of the estimated population with the condition actually know they have it.
