Alprazolam is the generic name of this medication and Xanax is the brand name.
It is available in tablet form and is manufactured by Upjohn (Xanax) of the USA.
The active ingredient of this medication is Alprazolam and inactive ingredients are cellulose; corn starch; docusate sodium; lactose.
It is primarily used in treating anxiety and panic disorder.
Common Uses:
This medication is used in treating anxiety and panic disorder.
Off Label Uses:
None noted currently.
Side Effects:
Change in appetite;
Change in sexual desire;
Constipation;
Dizziness;
Drowsiness;
Dry mouth;
Increased saliva production;
Lightheadedness;
Tiredness;
Trouble concentrating;
Unsteadiness;
Weight changes.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not advisable in people who:
Are allergic to any ingredient of alprazolam or other benzodiazepines like diazepam;
Have acute narrow-angle glaucoma; severe liver disease;
Are taking an azole antifungal like itraconazole or ketoconazole;
Are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant.
Drug Interactions:
Azole antifungals like itraconazole or ketoconazole;
Cimetidine;
Clozapine;
Clozapine;
Delavirdine;
Fluoxetine;
Fluvoxamine;
HIV protease inhibitors like ritonavir;
Hydantoins like phenytoin or valproic acid;
Rifampin;
St. John's wort.

The most famous shorter acting anxiolytic drug!...Not very effective for insomnia.Benzodiazepines such as Lorazepam,Diazepam,Clonazepam are much better for Insonia associated with anxiety.Could be taken with Sertraline for enhanced effects.Should be taken as prescribed.Dependence may develope,hence should be taken carefully.

I like it becuase it helps with sleep (to aleviate anxiety to fall asleep)---but when I wake up I seem "foggy"---and have VERY BAD short term memory (in the a.m.---ie. forgetting If I feed the dogs---10minutes after feed them..so I have to leave reminders for myself to make sure I did these things.....
