The generic name of this medication is amikacin sulfate and the brand name is Amikin.
The active ingredient of this medication is amikacin sulfate.
Amikacin sulfate is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Princeton.
Treatment of infections caused due certain strains of bacteria like gram-negative bacteria. It functions by ihibiting the production of bacterial proteins leading to bacterial cell death.
Common Uses:
Treatment of infections caused due certain strains of bacteria like gram-negative bacteria.
Off Label Uses:
None noted currently.
Side Effects:
Breathing difficulty;
Loss of balance;
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue);
Decreased urination;
Dizziness;
Hearing loss;
Lightheadedness.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Neurotoxicity;
Nephrotoxicity.
It is also not advisable in pregnant women; those that are planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.
Drug Interactions:
Nephrotoxic potential (eg, cephalosporins, enflurane, methoxyflurane, vancomycin);
Loop diuretics (eg, furosemide);
Neuromuscular blocking agents (eg, tubocurarine).
