Warnings
The generic name of this medication is trihexyphenidyl and brand names are Artane, Trihexane.
The active ingredient of this medication is trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride. The inactive ingredients include alcohol; citric acid; flavorings; methylparaben; propylparaben; sodium chloride and sorbitol solution.
Mainly used to treat the stiffness, tremors, spasms, and poor muscle control of Parkinson's disease.
Common Uses:
This medication is used to treat the stiffness, tremors, spasms, and poor muscle control for people suffering from Parkinson's disease.
Off Label Uses:
It is also used to treat and prevent the same muscular conditions when they are caused by drugs such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin), perphenazine (Trilafon), haloperidol (Haldol), thiothixene (Navane), and others.
Side Effects:
An allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
Fever;
Tachycardia or irregular heartbeats;
Anxiety, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, hyperactivity, or loss of consciousness;
Seizures;
discomfort in the eyes;
Rashes.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Narrow-angle glaucoma;
Obstruction in the bowel or a complication of bowel disease known as megacolon;
Myasthenia gravis;
Renal or liver diseases.
Drug Interactions:
Quinidine (Quinora, Quinaglute, Quinidex, Cardioquin);
Amantadine (Symmetrel);
Digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps); or
Haloperidol (Haldol);
An antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl, others), chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton, others), triprolidine (Actifed, others);
A phenothiazine (used to treat mania, schizophrenia, other psychiatric conditions, and nausea and vomiting) such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin);
A tricyclic antidepressant (used to treat depression, pain, or obsessive-compulsive disorder) such as amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep).
