The generic name of this medication is diphenhydramine and brand names are Aler-Tab, Allergy, Allermax, Altaryl, Benadryl, Children's Allergy, Diphen Cough, Diphenhist, Dytuss, Q-Dryl, Siladryl, Silphen Cough, Simply Sleep, Sleep-ettes, Sominex Maximum Strength Caplet and Theraflu Thin Strips Multi Symptom.

The active ingredient of this medication is diphenhydramine hydrochloride.

This medication is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, itching, watery eyes, hives, rashes, itching and other symptoms of allergies and the common cold.

Common Uses:

This medication is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, itching, watery eyes, hives, rashes, itching and other symptoms of allergies and the common cold.

Off Label Uses:

Benadryl is also used to suppress coughs, to treat motion sickness, to induce sleep and to treat mild forms of Parkinson's disease.

Side Effects:
Sleepiness, fatigue or dizziness.
Headache.
Dry mouth.
Difficulty urinating or an enlarged prostate.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended for patients with the following conditions:
Patients that have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days.
If there is glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye.
If there is a stomach ulcer.
If there is an enlarged prostate, bladder problems or difficulty urinating.
In patients with hypertension or any type of heart problems.
During pregnancy, pre-pregnancy.

Drug Interactions:
MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine), scopolamine, tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline).
Diphenhydramine or other antihistamines (e.g., dimenhydrinate). This includes medications taken by mouth or applied to the skin (e.g., anti-itch cream, ointment, spray).

Benadryl works for allergies or a mild cold or flu, but never when symptoms are more severe. I use it usually for my allergies and it is currently working well.

About Diphenhydramine

Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (trade name Benadryl is produced by J&J or Dimedrol outside the U.S. Nytol as a sleeping pill) is an over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamine, sedative and hypnotic. It may also be used for the treatment of extrapyramidal side effects of typical antipsychotics. It is a member of the ethanolamine class of antihistaminergic agents. The brand Benadryl is currently trademarked in the United States by Pfizer; however, many drug store chains and retail outlets manufacture less-costly generic versions under their own store brands, often sold in boxes that share similarities in packaging size, colors and appearance of the Pfizer pill.
