Common Uses:

This medication is used to treat or prevent certain problems that can happen with long-term kidney dialysis, such as low levels of calcium or high levels of parathyroid hormone.

Off Label Uses:

Side Effects:
Nausea;
Headache;
Constipation or pain/discomfort at the injection site.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended for following conditions:
Who are allergic to it; or to other vitamin D products;
Who have high calcium levels (hypercalcemia);
Who have heart problems (e.g., irregular heartbeat, coronary artery disease), kidney disease, kidney stones.

Drug Interactions:
Other vitamin D products (e.g., ergocalciferol);
Cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin, digitalis);
corticosteroids (e.g., hydrocortisone, prednisone);
Magnesium-containing medications (e.g., antacids, milk of magnesia);
Phosphate binders, "water pills" (e.g., thiazide diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide).

The generic name of this medication is Rocaltrol (calcitriol) and Brand Name is Calcijex. The active ingredients of this medication is Rocaltrol (calcitriol). This medication is used to treat or prevent certain problems that can happen with long-term kidney dialysis, such as low levels of calcium or high levels of parathyroid hormone.

About Calcitriol

Rocaltrol (calcitriol) is a synthetic vitamin D analog which is active in the regulation of the absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and its utilization in the body. All dosage forms contain butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) as antioxidants. The capsules contain a fractionated triglyceride of coconut oil, and the oral solution contains a fractionated triglyceride of palm seed oil. Gelatin capsule shells contain glycerin, parabens (methyl and propyl) and sorbitol. The two known sites of action of calcitriol are intestine and bone.
