Prochlorperazine is the generic name of this medication and it is a phenothiazine medication that functions by affecting the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain to reduce nausea and the urge to vomit.

It is manufactured and marketed under the brand name Comazol Oral.

This medication is used in the treament of severe nausea and vomiting resulting from causes like anti-cancer treatment; migraine headaches; and post surgery nausea/vomiting.

Common Uses:

Used in the treatment of severe nausea and vomiting resulting from anti-cancer treatment, migraine headaches, and various other reasons.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Allergic reactions like:
Itching/swelling of the face/tongue/throat;
Rash;
Severe dizziness;
Trouble breathing.
Agitation;
Blurred vision;
Dark-colored urine;
Difficulty speaking;
Dizziness;
Drooling;
Drowsiness;
Dry mouth;
Enlarged and tender breasts;
Facial muscle twitching;
Increased or profuse sweating;
Irregular and/or rapid heartbeat;
Mood swings;
Persistent nausea/vomiting;
Seizures;
Severe abdominal discomfort and pain;
Severe muscle stiffness;
Shaking or tremors;
Signs of infection like fever, persistent sore throat;
Trouble swallowing;
Trouble urinating;
Uncontrolled movements;
Unusual bleeding/bruising;
Unusual breast milk production;
Very high fever;
Weakness;
Yellowish discoloration of eyes and/or skin.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in children under two years of age or during surgery on children;
Not advisable in people who are allergic to prochlorperazine and other phenothiazines like chlorpromazine;
Not recommended in people who have blood disorders like bone marrow depression; ongoing breathing problems like asthma and emphysema; and certain heart rhythm problems.

Drug Interactions:
Dofetilide;
Drugs that affect heart rhythm like cisapride; halofantrine; sparfloxacin; pimozide.
Drugs that increase dopamine activity like cabergoline; pergolide;
Epinephrine;
Metrizamide;
Sibutramine.

About Prochlorperazine

Prochlorperazine (marketed under the names Compazine, Buccastem, Stemetil, Phenotil) is a drug that belongs to the phenothiazine class that is used for the treatment of nausea and vertigo. It is also a typical antipsychotic drug and a highly potent neuroleptic, 10 to 20 times more potent than chlorpromazine. In Pakistan, it is marketed under the name Phenotil by Unexo Labs.
