This is a laxative that initiates bowel movements.
Used in the treatment of constipation or to empty the bowels prior to colonoscopy, surgery, colonoscopy, other intestinal procedures, and x-rays.

Bisacodyl is the active ingredient of this medication.

Functions by creating a parasympathetic effect on mucosal sensory nerves, thereby increasing peristaltic contractions and stimulating bowel movements.

Common Uses:

This is a laxative that stimulates bowel movements;
Used in the treatment of constipation;
Effective to empty bowels prior to colonoscopy, surgery, various intestinal procedures, and x-rays.

Off Label Uses:

None noted thus far.

Side Effects:
Confusion;
Diarrhea;
Dizziness;
Drowsiness;
Feeling short of breath;
Gas;
Increased thirst;
Indigestion;
Loss or lack of appetite;
Low potassium marked by confusion, irregular heart rate, feeling extremely thirsty, increased urination, discomfort in the lower extremities, muscle weakness or limp feeling).
Mood changes;
Nausea;
Nausea;
Rectal bleeding;
Severe abdominal cramps;
Severe diarrhea or vomiting;
Skin rash.
Swelling;
Urinating less than normal or not passing urine at all;
Vomiting;
Weight gain;

Cautions / Warnings:

Prolonged use of this might create laxative dependency in order to achieve bowel movements;
Damage the bowel;
Potentially cause malnutrition;
Create issues with regard to the quantity of water and salts retained in the body.
Not advisable to adminster medication within an hour of consuming antacids or eating any dairy products;
Could cause abdominal pain;
Rectal bleeding if any requires immediate medical attention.

Drug Interactions:
Antacids;
H2-blockers, for example: cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine, and ranitidine;
Proton pump inhibitors like esomeprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole, and rabeprazole;
Physician advise required in people who are on the following medications:
Herbal products;
Minerals;
OTC medications;
Other prescription medications.
Vitamins;
