Resveratrol is a phytoalexin (antibiotic produced by plants that are under attack). Found in red grapes and Japanese Knotweed, and in varying quantities in red wine, it is sold as a nutritional supplement. Uses: Resveratrol can reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Resveratrol may improve health and longevity by mimicking some of the beneficial effects of a calorie restricted diet, the only known cause of life extension in mammals. Resveratrol has already been proved to extend life span in yeast, worms, fruit flies, and mice. Resveratrol might offset the effects of obesity and poor lifestyle choices, and may even help avert disorders related to mitochondrial dysfunction, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Studies are also being done on the effect of Resveratrol on cancer and diabetes in mine.
