Treatment Information
The literal translation of Lactobacillus acidophilus is acid loving milk bacteria. This is a homofermentative species as it ferments sugar into lactic acid. L.acidophilus is a naturally occurring organism in the gastrointestinal tracts of humans as well as animals, and also found in the mouth and vagina.

In depth studies have been conducted on a few strains of L.acidophilus to better understand its health advantages. It is understood to improve the gastrointestinal functions, boosts the immune system and decreases the incidence of vaginal infections by yeast. Studies have indicated that L.acidophilus alleviates indigestion and diarrhea.

In the market today, one can find a number of products that contain L.acidophilus such as milk and yoghurt. This is mostly consumed by individuals that have poor lactose tolerance as a substitute for milk.
