The generic name of this medication is butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine and the brand names are Esgic, Fioricet.

The active ingredients of this medication are butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine.

This combination medication is used in the treatment of tension headaches. Acetaminophen helps reduce the pain from headache and caffeine helps increase the effects of acetaminophen. Butalbital is a sedative that helps decrease anxiety and causes sleepiness and relaxation.

Common Uses:

This combination medication is used in the treatment of tension headaches. Acetaminophen helps reduce the pain from headache and caffeine helps increase the effects of acetaminophen. Butalbital is a sedative that helps decrease anxiety and causes sleepiness and relaxation.

Off Label Uses:

None noted thus far.

Side Effects:
Nausea;
Vomiting;
Abdominal pain;
Shaking (tremor);
Shortness of breath;
Lightheadedness;
Dizziness or drowsiness.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients; or to other barbiturates (e.g., phenobarbital) or xanthine derivatives (e.g., theophylline);
Who have severe breathing problems (e.g., bronchopneumonia), a certain enzyme disorder (porphyria).

It is also not recommended in pregnant women; those that are planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.

Drug Interactions:
Adenosine;
Anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine, phenytoin);
Beta agonists (e.g., albuterol);
Drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove this medication from your body (such as macrolide antibiotics including erythromycin;
Cimetidine, disulfiram, valproic acid, fluvoxamine;
MAO inhibitors including furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine), isoniazid, lithium, methoxyflurane, phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine).
