Description | Uses & Side Effects | Warnings

Atarax and Vistaril are the brand names of this medication and Hydroxyzine hydrochloride is the generic name as well as the active ingredient of this medication.

The inactive ingredients include anhydrous lactose, colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, FD&C Yellow No. 6, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80 and titanium dioxide.

It is used mainly to provide from:
Symptoms of anxiety and tension associated with psychotic disorders;
Symptoms of allergic reactions associated with atopic dermatitis; contact dermatitis; and chronic urticaria.
It is also used as a sedative before and after administering general anesthesia.

Common Uses:

Used to provide relief from:
Symptoms of allergic conditions like atopic dermatitis; contact dermatitis; and chronic urticaria;
Symptoms of anxiety and tension associated with psychotic conditions;
Also used as a sedative before and after general anesthesia.

Off Label Uses:

Alcohol withdrawal;
Insomnia;
Nausea and vomiting;
Opioid withdrawal.

Side Effects:
Drowsiness;
Dry mouth;
Dyspnea or difficulty breathing;
Hallucinations;
Seizures;
Shakiness.

Cautions / Warnings:

Caution advised in people with:
Allergies including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives;
Alzheimer's disease;
Benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH;
Cardiovascular conditions;
Dysuria or difficulty urinating;
Glaucoma;
Hepatic conditions like liver failure, hepatitis, or cirrhosis;
Renal conditions like renal failure.
Avoid driving or operating machinary post consuming this medication since it causes drowsiness.
Not recommended in pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor medications;
Alcoholic beverages;
Anticholinergic medications;
Antidepressants;
Antihistamines;
Antipsychotic medications;
Anxiety medications;
Muscle relaxants;
Narcotic pain relievers;
Phenothiazine medications;
Pramlintide;
Sleep medications.

29 Jun 2009	This drug makes me extremely sleepy. After I take it, I cannot do anything else except fall asleep. Even if I take it at night right before I go to bed, I wake up the next day feeling drowsy and cannot function well. Since I am a student, it makes studying and attending classes difficult sometimes. I have to plan on taking the medication on a night before a day that I do not have to wake up early or have something important to do. The thing I like about this medication is that when I do take it, it makes my allergies go away for several days. 11 May 2009	it was prescribed to me for eczema -- severe nausea and vomiting/dizziness followed by the worst skin rash i have had in my life.
