Common Uses:

Metformin hydrochloride is used lower blood sugar levels in type-2 diabetes by decreasing hepatic glucose production and increasing the response of insulin.

Off Label Uses:

Some of the off label uses of metformin hydrochloride include treating alopecia or hair loss and weight loss.

Side Effects:
Some of the common side effects while taking metformin hydrochloride include: abdominal discomfort, gas, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and diarrhea.

Cautions / Warnings:

Cautions and warnings that need to be noted while taking metformin hydrochloride include the following: The patient may develop kidney problems, and would need to undergo kidney function test annually, hypoglycemia, patient undergoing surgery should discontinue use of the drug, during severe dehydration the drug should be discontinued, acute and chronic metabolic acidosis, and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Drug Interactions:
Various drugs or medication that could possibly interact with Metformin hydrochloride include: amiloride, calcium channel blockers, cimetidine, decongestants, digoxin, estrogens, furosemide, glyburide, isoniazid, niacin, morphine, phenytoin, ranitidine, steroids, thyroid hormones, triamterene, quinine, procainamide, vancomycin, and excessive alcohol intake.

09 Jul 2011	Metformin (daily) along with diet and daily exercise helped me lose ~50 pounds of weight and bring down my blood sugars to about 100 +/-20 points in about 3 years, Now, I am off metformin and any other medication for diabetes, and control my blood sugar ~100 only with healthy diet and daily exercise. —Posted by Anonymous Respond Display Name: Email: (Required) Notify me of new comments Email me monthly survey results Sending...
