Gout treatment
Description
Gout is also referred to as crystal-induced arthritis and is a result of accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joint regions. Gout normally occurs in joint areas like the knees; wrists; foot; joint of the big toe; elbows; and various other joints like the spine; hips; and shoulders. Uric acid is formed by the body while processing waste products like purines. It is generally dissolved in the b
lood and sent out of the body along with urine; however, if the level of uric acid is high it is not washed out that easily and starts crystallizing and accumulating in the joint areas resulting in gout. This results in severe inflammation of the joint region thereby leading to pain; redness; tenderness; and warmth.

Causes
While the exact cause of gout is unknown, there are several reasons that could lead to gout and they are:
• Defective genes that are responsible for metabolism; can lead to an excess production of uric acid and also retention of the same; leading to gout.
• Certain surgical procedures could also result in gout.
• Dysfunctional or impaired kidney functioning could result in poor elimination of u
ric acid; leading to crystallization and accumulation of uric acid in the join areas; thereby causing gout.
• Sudden forms of sever illnesses could lead to gout, for example, cancer, and hypothyroidism.
• Various medications like thiazide diuretics or water pills administered during the management and treatment of hypertension and heart failure could also result in high levels of uric acid and gout.
• Extreme crash diets can also cause gout.
• Disease conditions of the blood vessels/capillaries and other blood-forming systems like leukemia, multiple myeloma, and various other carinomas; and psoriasis could also lead to gout.
• Excess intake of alcohol, obesity, and purine-rich diet can also be responsible for gout.
• Increased stress can also cause uric acid levels to increase thereby resulting in gout.
• Deficiencies of vitamin A, B5, and E could lead to gout.

Prevention
• Weight reduction program in case of patients that are obese or overweight;
• Avoid or curtail purine-rich diet;
• Stop alcohol consumption;
• Change medication if one is on diuretics for hypertension;
• Avoid food that could lead to high levels of uric acid, for example: anchovies, asparagus, legumes, mushrooms, meat, organ meat, and shellfish.
• Drink 6-8 eight-ounce glasses of water, f
resh fruit/vegetable juices, herbal tea everyday;
• Increase the intake of potassium in the regular diet;
• Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables that help dissolve uric acid crystals;
• Take flavonoid quercetin;
• Lemon juice contains calcium carbonate which neutralizes acids in the body, including uric acid; hence include lemon juice in the everyday diet;
• Half teaspoon of baking soda taken with meals also helps reduce gout;
• Keep legs elevated;
• Try and stick to a high-fiber diet since it helps eliminate uric acid.

Common Symptoms
• Gout is a condition that is marked by four main stages during which the symptoms could vary from absolutely no symptoms to severe signs and symptoms.
• During the first stage which is referred to as the asymptomatic stage, there are absolutely no symptoms as the name suggests; however there is an increase in the uric acid levels.
• The second stage or acute stage is marked by sings and symptom
s that exist for a period of five to ten days at a stretch; and symptoms include sudden-onset joint pain; marked swelling in the affected joint; warmth associated with swelling and pain; tenderness and accompanied redness and bruised appearance.
• The third or intercritical stage is again asymptomatic in nature where there is a complete absence of any symptoms and is considered the symptom-free stage between two episodes of gout.
• The fourth stage is referred to as the chronic stage and is marked by symptoms of extremely painful joints that is persistent in nature; extremely large deposits of uric acid crystals in the affected joints, especially between the bones; cartilages, soft tissues, and membranes; stiffness in the joints; skin covering the joint could develop sores that are filled with pus; and limited range of motion in the joint affected by gout.

Traditional Treatment
Medications include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs to provide relief from pain; colchicine, corticosteroid drugs, and/or adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH); probenecid (Benemid, Parbenem or Probalan); sulfinpyrazone (Anturane); or allopurinol (Lopurin, Zurinol or Zyloprim). Another form of gout known as tophi could be treated with probenecid, sulfinpyrazone and allopurinol.
Alternative Treatment
• Naturopathy: Cherries are considered to help treat gout and a pound of cherries a day is found to be effective. Vitamin supplements like vitamin C, B complex, pantothenic acid (B5), and Bromelain 500 mg are also found to be equally effective. Fish oil capsules; L-glutamine; L-glutathione; L-glycine; L-methionine; magnesium citrate; shark cartilage etc are also various alternative medications tha
t are popular in treating gout. 6X Silicea along with Nat. Phos. and Nat. Sulph taken during an attack of gout are found to help overcome the condition effectively.
• Acupressure is another form of alternative treatment that helps treat gout and methods include the following:
Apply pressure very gently below the center of the nose towards the upper lip.
Apply pressure or massage the area between the ball of the foot and the bottom of the big toe on both feet and also the area halfway between the base of the little toe and the heel pad. There are several other areas that can be followed through acupressure for relief from gout.
