Obsessive Compulsive Disorder treatment

Description
OCD is classified as an anxiety disorder. It is characterized by repetitive and unwanted thoughts, compulsions, feelings, and obsessions. Temporary relief can be attained by carrying out these behaviors and urges, while ignoring the obsessive thoughts can lead to greater anxiety for the affected individual.
Causes
Most people begin to develop symptoms by age 30. While there is no confirmed theory which explains the cause of this disorder, several studies indicate that brain abnormailities are present in patients with OCD. The causes are mostly biological.
Prevention
OCD cannot be prevented from starting, but a relapse of symptoms can be avoided by staying on your treatment path (therapy and medicines).
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms for those with OCD generally include constant thoughts and urges to carry out obsessive and compuslive behaviors. These obsessions are not linked to drug use or medical illnesses. Furthermore, the obsessions interfere with everyday life by causing distress. OCD also causes extreme feelings of panic, fear, and guilt.
Traditional Treatment
There is no cure available for OCD. However many therapy based treatments can be used. The most effective therapy is cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, in which the patient learns to tolerate the obsessive thoughts by being exposed to them repeatedly. Aside from therapy, medical treatments are available to aid in reducing symptoms of OCD. Therapy and medical treatments work best when used togethe View more...
Alternative Treatment
Meditation and exercise may serve as temporary natural stress relief to ease anxiety symptoms. Also, if the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor does not work, a tricyclic antidepressant may work. Side effects include urination difficulties, drop in blood pressure, sleepiness, and dry mouth. Furthermore, a diet therapy, music therapy, and chinese herbs may help with OCD.

Research and Development
A current hypothesis suggests that OCD sympttoms may somehow result from an imbalance of glutamate in the brain. Potentially, new medications may be released in the future that regulate glutamate levels. Researchers have found a link between OCD patients and a glutamate transporter gene called SLC141, which encodes a protein called EAAC1 that functions as a regulator for the flow of glutamate in View more...
