Myasthenia Gravis treatment

Description
A chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that affects voluntary muscles.
Causes
Unknown. Virus and/or certain medications are suspected to contribute to developing MG; however, studies are not conclusive.
Prevention
Unfortunately, there is no known way of preventing the disease; however, symptoms may be alleviated by recognizing some of the following triggers: repetitive activity, emotional stress, overexertion, excessive heat, physical stress (fever, surgery, radiation therapy, infection), abnormal thyroid activity, low potassium levels, drugs that interfere with muscle activity (muscle relaxants, anesthetic View more...
Common Symptoms
Most common: Ptosis (drooping eyelids), diplopia (double vision), and muscle weakness after use of the affected muscle. Muscle weakness usually resolves after rest, but will likely recur. Other common symptoms include: facial paralysis or weakness, hoarseness or change in voice, fatigue, difficulty chewing, swallowing, and smiling; ineffective cough due to weak expiratory muscles
Rare Symptoms
Upper airway obstruction may occur if bulbar and upper airway muscles are affected.
Traditional Treatment
Cholinesterase inhibitors (i.e. neostigmine & pyridostigmine) assist in improving neuromuscular transmission as well as increase muscle strength. Immunosuppressive agents (prednisone, azathioprine, cyclosporin, mycophenolate mofetil, tracrolimus) lessen the overactive immune response. View more...
